I really expected to love Nevernight because a lot of my friends on here do...but that is NOT how it went down, eh @mariannerosen.writer @banrion_cruimh_leabhar?! 😂 The world-building was insanely good but the characters just weren’t fleshed out enough and the plot was predictable 🤷🏻‍♀️ I don’t get what all the hype was about!! I’ll do a proper full review on my blog at some stage (if I ever get the time 😫)

I think I’m the busiest I’ve ever been right now! Between studying for a full time degree and all the work I’ve been doing for my new business @wordsmith.candles, I’ve had very little time for my hobbies aka reading, blogging and bookstagram 😭 I only got through Nevernight because it was a buddy read 😂 I did get to read a book last weekend though, so I’ll post about that soon too 😊

I tidied up my book nook today, and as soon as I took my phone out to take a picture, Clover plonked herself in front of the camera, looking for a treat 🤣 She’s gotten far too fond of posing for the camera lol 😂

I finished reading Wonder Woman: Warbringer which I posted about at the weekend 😊 It had a satisfying conclusion, if a little rushed. I’d give it 4 stars 🌟

The next book I’m going to read is The Handmaid’s Tale! I’ve never read it before, nor have I seen the tv show, so I’m rather excited! I want to be able to join in the hype for The Testaments 😅

My BIG news is that I had my orientation for my new college course today ☺️ it really confirmed for me that I made the right choice to go back and get my degree 😁

We went to the west coast today. It was extremely wet and miserable, but once @shetland_clover saw the beach there was no way she would let us go back to the car without letting her run around off the lead and dig holes in the sand 😂 so now my car is full of sand, but at least the dog is happy! Personally, I was happier when we got to call in to the café afterwards 😂😂

My weekend #bookhaul from Dublin 😍
1. Nevernight - I stopped trying to find the UK hardback for a reasonable price and got the paperback so I can finally jump on this bandwagon
2. Lady Midnight - it’s the third in the Dark Artifices series, I enjoyed the first two! I had to wait for the smaller format paperback to come out, because that’s the version I have of the other two 🤷🏻‍♀️ can’t have different heights on my shelf!!! (Is this just me?)
3. The Importance of Being Aisling - the sequel to OMG, What a Complete Aisling. I would have read this a lot sooner...but again I had to wait for the mass market paperback 😂
4. The Murders in the Rue Morgue and Other Tales - 18 other tales to be precise! I’ve never read any Poe before so I think I’ll read these around Hallowe’en as I believe some are quite spooky 👻
5. Wuthering Heights - I read this when I was a teenager and I didn’t like it 😅 I bought it because I’m collecting all of these penguin faux-leather bound editions (only one left to buy now!) I’m hoping that I’ll enjoy it better on re-reading it 😊 •
I wasn’t planning on buying ANY books this weekend because of my morbidly obese #tbr pile, but you know, self control (I have none) 🤣.

Ravencry is the sequel to Ed McDonald’s 2017 debut Blackwing, and I enjoyed it just as much as the first instalment. It’s a grimdark fantasy which isn’t usually my cup of tea (ahem) but it’s got just enough heart for my sensitive soul 😅 I’m looking forward to reading the third book, Crowfall, and seeing how the whole series ties up 😊

I have a mini review for ye tonight! 🎉 The Book of M is a mind-bending adventure with a lot of heart 😊 It’s a dystopian story, but not as we know it. It begins innocuously enough: a young man in India loses his shadow, followed by more and more people. It spreads globally, at random. What soon becomes apparent about the shadowless, however, is that their shadow was where their memories were stored, and without it, the shadowless people soon forget everything they ever knew.
•
As different parts of the world are affected, societies begin to crumble as panic sets in...Not only this, but every time a shadowless misremembers something, it comes true, no matter how bizarre or anomalous that new truth may be. •
Ory and Max are a married couple. They avoided the worst of the inevitable riots in the immediate aftermath of this catastrophe. It is 2 years after the first shadowless appeared, when Max loses her shadow. In order to save Ory from whatever she might misremember, Max leaves their hidden sanctuary. With her memories slipping from her mind like sand in an hourglass, she knows she might not make it very far, but she has to try.
•
Ory follows her, because he loves her and can’t just let her go. The plot follows their journeys, and we explore the world of people without memories, and of those left behind who do remember.
•
The pacing in this book is good, and there are a lot unexpected plot twists. There are two more main characters I haven’t even touched on, and their stories are just as interesting as the main arcs. Overall I really enjoyed reading The Book of M, but I did have some issues with it too.
•
My first problem was the lack of structure surrounding the consequences of people’s memory loss. Some effects of ‘misremembering’ seem to be much further reaching than others. The lack of logic is irritating!
•
Also, the author seemed to be trying to make some sort of observation about human nature, but I’m still not sure what that statement is meant to be? Still gets 4 stars though! 🌟

We only left Kilkee a week ago and I already want to go back! It’s been raining so much here in Cavan, it feels like the summer is over 🙈 the good news is, I finally found the time to update my blog (link in bio), with 4 quick reviews of some of my recent-ish reads 😊

I don’t have much other news. Myself and @darrenvahey have been working away on getting Wordsmith Candles up and running, and I should have more info on that soon (such as a launch date!!). I’m also preparing to go back to university in September 😱 it’s been almost 5 years since I dropped out the first time around, and I like to think I’ve grown a lot in that time. I’m less concerned about what other people think, and I’ve chosen a course that suits me a lot more than medicine did. I’ll be studying digital marketing! So there’ll be a lot more social media and blogging in my future I think 😅 I guess I’m just fascinated by this crazy online world 🌍

The Raven Tower is one of the strangest books I have ever read 🤯 it’s narrated by a sentient rock-god 😅 I honestly don’t know what to make of it! If fantasy Hamlet re-tellings and omnipotent rocks are your thing, then you should definitely read this book...everyone else should probably steer clear 😂 the narrative style was just waaaay too stylistic and I felt like I was at a very distant remove from the characters and the action (of which there was little). It read like a writing challenge exercise that went too far 🙈 Ann Leckie is obviously a great writer but the result was just *too* odd and not like a novel at all 🤷🏻‍♀️ Or maybe it just went over my head! 2/5 stars

I finished reading this book yesterday 😊 it was a solid 4 star read! The more Cassandra Clare I read, the more hooked I get by her characters and plots! Not to mention the incredible world building 😁 my only complaint is that it was a looooong book, and there were some relationship arcs that went in circles 🤣 regardless of that, she has come a long way since her first series! (I found her writing style to be really cheesy when I read her first few books, way back when)

Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff have done it again 😍 Aurora Rising is every bit as adrenaline inducing as their last collaboration (the illuminae files) and I need MORE! I loved the cast of characters, the various space settings throughout the galaxy, and just the general playfulness of this awesome book! There were nods to pop culture and ‘history’ that I really enjoyed, and it was very slick in the way it was written. The dialogue was 10/10 for sassy-ness. (I’m looking at you, Fin!)

Maybe it doesn’t deserve it because it’s not exactly mind blowing, but I’m giving it 5 stars for the entertainment factor ⭐️ I genuinely hope they write like 10 books in this series 😁 Thanks again to the utterly amazing @meeghanreads for getting me this copy signed by the authors! 💙💚💜

I’m #currentlyreading Wicked Saints by Emily A. Duncan ♥️ it’s pretty enjoyable so far! I’m about half way through and really interested to see what happens. The setting is fab (Russian vibes) and the characters are all great. There is no real wow-factor yet though, so we shall see. I’ll be posting a full review of this book on my blog on Friday!
